As well as being an experienced author and researcher, Owen O’Shea offers ghost-writing and publishing services to clients who want to tell their stories, prepare their manuscript for publication and publish their work.

With other experienced professionals, Owen has worked on several ghost-writing, editing and publishing projects:

  • He was one of the researchers and ghost-writers for The Summit: How Triumph Turned to Tragedy on K2’s Deadliest Days by Pat Falvey and Pemba Gyalje Sherpa (Beyond Endurance Publishing, 2013) which tells the story of the deaths of 11 climbers on the world’s second highest mountain in August 2008.

  • Owen worked with the former Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry South, John O’Leary, to write and publish his memoirs, On the Doorsteps: Memoirs of a long-serving TD, which was published by Irish Political Memoirs in 2011.

  • In 2023, he assisted the O’Connor family in posthumously publishing a memoir of Patrick ‘Chub’ O’Connor about his father, Timothy ‘Chub’ O’Connor, a Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry South between 1961 and 1981 (Laune Press, 2023)

  • Owen has also worked on other privately published works or private or family memoirs and writings which have been shared with family and friends and not published for a wide audience.

Ghost-writing

Ghost writing is the process whereby a writer writes a book for someone else who becomes the book’s author.

  • Have you ever considered publishing your life story, your autobiography or a personal or family memoir?

  • Have you had a life-changing experience that others might like to read about?

  • Would you like to write about something or someone that interests you or that you are passionate about?

  • Have you researched a subject or collected material of interest which you would like to compile and publish as a book?

  • Maybe you never time or the inclination to get around to writing the story and have it published?

Working with an experienced ghost-writer offers you the opportunity to write the story you have always wanted to tell but haven’t yet got around to.

Publishing, editing and proofreading

Owen has worked on several publishing projects, including those listed above, and he regularly involves and collaborates with other experienced professionals to assist clients in the many stages of the publishing process:

Editing and proofreading

Ensuring that your manuscript is edited for typographical errors, grammar, corrections and amendments and that it is proofread to ensure that is ‘clean’ or readable and ready for publication

Design and production

Engaging with a designer to prepare an appropriate and attractive design and layout for the book, including the text, images, and the book cover to ensure that is published to a high standard

Publicity and promotion

Owen has extensive experience in public relations, media promotion and event management. He works with clients to promote their books, prepare an engaging launch event, and ensure widespread publicity for their books in local and national media and on social media. What are the costs?

Each project is unique so at the beginning of the process and during an initial consultation, the project is costed based on detailed discussions and the extent of the various services required.

Costs are determined by the extent and duration of the project, depending on the type of the book involved. For example, if there is extensive research or interviews to be completed with the author, that will add to the timeframe and costs.

The cost also depends on the length of time involved in the project – depending on the size of the book, the engagement of a ghost-writer can last as little as a few months or can take as long as a year.

In many cases, Owen engages the expertise of other editors and publishers who he was worked with in the past to ensure that the publication is produced to a high standard.
